Celtic Calendar Making Workshop for Kids at IMMA Earth Rising, 2024

We acknowledged the dates of the Earth Rising Festival coinciding with the Autumnal Equinox. Our desire was to create a playful, creative space for the kids and encourage a liberation in art making whilst learning more about ancient Ireland and its deep understanding of nature. We hoped they would make a mess and try mediums they’ve never used before.

 

We have both worked with kids using collage and mixed media. I loved Learning about incorporating the head, hands and heart into teaching whilst studying for the Children in Permaculture course. It gave me the clarification that there are indeed, many ways to learn. Using permaculture and creativity are very worthwhile in my experience as a way to induce relaxation whilst gaining a broader knowledge of the natural systems we are all involved in every day.

 

Our medium was be a collection of recycled materials such as plastic waste, rubbish, second hand magazines and naturally dyed fabric scraps, natural homemade inks, lumen and cyanotype prints re-worked collaged onto segments of paper. We added baking soda and vinegar to change the Ph. to transform the colours of the natural inks before our eyes.
